"You shall not stand idly by while your neighbor's blood is shed." - Vayikra (Leviticus) 19:16
In the language of the Bible, a "goel" ("redeemer") is someone charged with the responsibility of restoring the rights and avenging wrongs done against his kinsman. In the case of a wrongful death, the term used is "goel hadam," usually translated as "avenger of the blood." That's pretty hardcore. And the terminology got us wondering, who were the greatest Avenger-like figures of the Biblical canon? You can probably see where we're going with this.
Maccabee Apparel's "Redeemers" series reimagines some of the greatest heroes of the Bible (and in the case of Judith, the Apocrypha) as superheroes, and frankly, it's not much of a stretch. Don't believe us? Check it out, we've got:
Moses (Moshe Rabbeinu) as “Divine Vision." According to the Torah, his face was aglow with literal rays of light as he came down from atop Mt. Sinai.
Joshua (Yehoshua ben Nun) as the great Hebrew patriot “Captain Israel," who led his people into the Promised Land.
Aaron (Aharon Kohen Gadol) as “Iron Mentsch," the High Priest whose legendary breastplate channeled unspeakable power (in fact, the only true power).
Samson (Shimshon HaGibor) as “The Incredible Anak" ("Titan") a Nazirite warrior with superhuman strength!
David (David HaMelech) as “Sharpshooter," a mighty king, and even before that, a great leader in battle. Even as a lad, he defeated the giant Golyat armed with nothing more than a sling, a stone, and unshakeable faith in the Almighty.
and Judith (Yehudit) as “Black Almanah” ("Widow" in Hebrew), a beautiful Jewish widow who used her charm and quick wit to seduce and decapitate (!) Holofernes, the general of an invading army and one of Israel's cruelest foes.
