"Even if all the nations that live in the king’s realm obey him, so that they forsake the religion of their ancestors and consent to the king’s orders, I and my sons and my brothers will continue to live by the covenant of our forefathers."
These were the words of Mattathias the Priest, of the House of Asmonaeus, in response to a Seleucid delegation, when they promised him special privileges in exchange for the simple gesture of presenting an offering before a Greek idol. Mattathias was having none of it. When the ceremony went forward anyway, Mattathias and his sons (among them the famed Judas Maccabaeus) crashed the party, and launched the Maccabean Revolt.
Sometimes in life, you have to compromise, to be flexible and show tact. But sometimes, a man of conscience has to stand by his principles, no matter the cost. Mattathias and his sons bore that cost, and in so doing liberated the Holy Land and, with a little help from above, saved their people and their way of life from annihilation.
